8 biomarkers
All the testosterone in the blood, showing how much the body makes.
Learn more about Total TestosteroneThe part of testosterone the body can use.
Learn more about Free TestosteroneA hormone from the brain that controls milk production and can affect periods and fertility when high.
Learn more about ProlactinA hormone from the brain that tells the ovaries to develop eggs and the testes to make sperm.
Learn more about FSHA hormone from the brain that tells the ovaries to release an egg and the testes to make testosterone.
Learn more about LHThe main form of oestrogen, which controls the menstrual cycle and helps protect bones.
Learn more about OestradiolA protein that carries sex hormones in the blood and controls how much is free for the body to use.
Learn more about SHBGA score that estimates how much testosterone is free for the body to use.
Learn more about FAIWhat does the hormone panel measure?
Testosterone, the main male sex hormone, and oestradiol, the main female one. FSH and LH come from the pituitary gland, and they are what tells the testes and ovaries how much hormone to make. Prolactin comes from the pituitary too, and it can quieten the FSH and LH signal when it rises. SHBG is the protein most sex hormone travels attached to, and free testosterone and FAI are calculated from testosterone and SHBG rather than measured.
Why does it matter?
Oestradiol and testosterone act well beyond fertility. Both slow the bone loss that goes on through adult life, and both fall with age, oestradiol sharply at menopause and testosterone gradually. Oestradiol also thickens the lining of the womb through each cycle. Testosterone maintains muscle mass and sex drive, in women as well as men. FSH and LH show whether a change began in the testes and ovaries or in the pituitary signal driving them.
