Liver health includes
7 biomarkers
A liver enzyme that rises when liver cells are damaged.
Learn more about ALTAn enzyme from the liver, heart and muscles that rises when any of them is damaged.
Learn more about ASTAn enzyme from the liver and bones that rises when bile flow is blocked or bones are growing.
Learn more about ALPA yellow pigment made when old red blood cells are broken down that is cleared by the liver.
Learn more about BilirubinThe main protein made by the liver, which keeps fluid in the blood vessels.
Learn more about AlbuminAll the protein in the blood, mainly albumin and antibodies.
Learn more about Total ProteinA group of proteins in the blood, mostly antibodies that fight infection.
Learn more about GlobulinWhat does the liver panel measure?
ALT and AST are enzymes held inside liver cells. ALP comes from the cells lining the bile ducts, the channels that drain bile out of the liver. Albumin is the main protein the liver makes. Globulin is mostly antibodies, and total protein is the two added together. Bilirubin is a pigment left over when old red blood cells are broken down, and the liver clears it out of the blood.
Why does it matter?
The liver clears waste out of the blood and makes the protein that holds fluid inside blood vessels, and it carries on doing both while it is being damaged. So there is usually nothing to feel, and a blood test is how damage gets picked up. ALT and AST belong inside liver cells, so finding them in the blood means cells have been injured, by alcohol or by fat gathering in the liver.
