10 biomarkersBlood cell health
How well your blood carries oxygen, fights infection and clots.
Blood cell health includes
10 biomarkers
A protein that stores iron, showing how much the body has in reserve.
Learn more about FerritinThe protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body.
Learn more about HaemoglobinThe percentage of the blood made up of red blood cells.
Learn more about HaematocritThe number of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body.
Learn more about RBC CountThe average size of red blood cells, which can change when the body is low in iron, B12 or folate.
Learn more about MCVThe average amount of haemoglobin in each red blood cell.
Learn more about MCHHow concentrated haemoglobin is inside red blood cells.
Learn more about MCHCSmall cell fragments that form clots to stop bleeding.
Learn more about PlateletsThe number of white blood cells, which fight infection.
Learn more about WBC CountThe most common white blood cell, which fights bacterial infections.
Learn more about Neutrophil CountWhat does the blood cell panel measure?
The cells in blood. Red cells carry oxygen, white cells fight infection, and platelets stop bleeding. Haemoglobin is the protein inside a red cell that holds the oxygen, and it is built from iron. MCV, MCH and MCHC describe the red cells themselves: how big they are and how much haemoglobin each one holds. Ferritin measures the iron the body keeps in store.
Why does it matter?
Red cells that carry less oxygen leave a person tired and breathless. Iron is what the bone marrow builds them from, and it comes from food and is lost through bleeding. The marrow draws on the iron store to keep building normal cells, so the store runs down before the cells change.
