8 biomarkersKidney health
How well your kidneys filter waste and keep minerals like sodium and potassium in balance.
Kidney health includes
8 biomarkers
A waste product from muscles that rises when the kidneys are not filtering well.
Learn more about CreatinineHow well the kidneys filter the blood.
Learn more about eGFRA mineral that controls how much water the body holds.
Learn more about SodiumA mineral that muscles, nerves and the heart need to work.
Learn more about PotassiumA waste product of breaking down protein, cleared by the kidneys.
Learn more about UreaA mineral that builds bones and helps muscles, nerves and the heart work.
Learn more about CalciumA mineral the body needs to make energy and to keep muscles and nerves working.
Learn more about MagnesiumA mineral the body needs to build bones and make energy.
Learn more about PhosphateWhat does the kidney panel measure?
Creatinine and urea are waste the kidneys clear out of the blood, and eGFR estimates how fast that filtering is going. Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphate are the salts and minerals the kidneys hold in place. Sodium sets how much water the body holds. Potassium and calcium let nerve and muscle cells fire and contract. Magnesium is needed by the enzyme reactions that produce energy, and phosphate is the mineral bone is built from.
Why does it matter?
Waste builds up in the blood when filtering falls. Filtering can fall a long way before a person feels anything, so a blood test is usually the first sign. The salts matter for a different reason: nerve and muscle cells, the heart among them, need them to work, and the kidneys are what keep them steady.
